The label stars Tom, Antonio’s famously gentle guard dog. The joke is in the name: in colloquial Spanish, “tener mala hostia” means having a bad temper — exactly the opposite of Tom.
The story
MALAOSTIA starts with Moscatel picked early, while its natural sugar level is still exceptionally low. Antonio then macerates the dry white wine with spices gathered from the Montes de Málaga, building an authentic vermouth that is aromatic, refreshing and firmly rooted in its landscape.
Tom, the kind, affectionate and remarkably docile guard dog on the label, supplies the joke. Antonio writes the wine’s name as MALAOSTIA. It plays on the colloquial Spanish expression “tener mala hostia”, meaning to have a bad temper or a mean streak. Tom could hardly be further from it.
